Veerayatan Vocational Training Center

Veerayatan, a well-known socio-religious organization headquartered in Bihar, has provided unflinching service in the fields of community health, education and employment for the past 29 years. They have taken a major lead in providing much needed help to the people who were affected by the massive earthquake in Gujarat.

One of the many projects they are working on at the moment, in Gujarat, is centered in the town of Jakhania, Kutch. This project's main goal is to assist and enrich the lives of those affected by the Gujarat Earthquake, especially in the field of primary through senior high school education and vocational training.

Post-earthquake, a lot of adults lost their only means of livelihood. In this scenario, it would be great if they were taught new skills to supplement existing skills. This would help them stand up on their own feet. This also ties in with VIDE's idea of doing projects that empower the people. With this in mind as a goal, VIDE is working with Veerayatan in constructing a vocational training centre for adults (men and women).

This vocational training centre will be equipped with tools and supplies for people to learn and produce quality items. Training will be provided in the areas of sewing/tailoring, Motor Winding, Electrical fittings, TV/VCR Repair, Refrigerator Repair, Teacher Training, Screen Printing, Carpentry and Nursing. They will also be trained to market the produce. The selling of the items will subsidize the cost of the training program. This centre will have 8 training rooms. On an average 1200 people will benefit annually from this centre. The total cost of this project is about USD 50,000 of which USD 35,000 will go towards constructing the centre and the remaining USD 15,000 will go towards acquiring the equipment necessary to run it.

Veerayatan, which was started in 1973 by Acharya Sri Chandanaji, has done many projects in Bihar in the areas of health and education. Their tremendous efforts have helped 10,000 students benefit from the operation of primary schools and other education programs every year. Besides this, medical assistance in the form of eye operations, polio operations, free medical equipment is being regularly provided.

VIDE will be working primarily with Veerayatan International(USA) and will only be involved in the construction of the centre and providing the equipments. The sustainability aspect of this project will be handled in full by Veerayatan India and Veerayatan International(USA).
