Ram Krishna Mission - Keshav Village School Reconstruction

RK mission is a well-known spiritual organization founded in 1897 by Sri. Ramakrishna, one of the greatest spiritual leader of the 20th century. RK Mission was founded in Calcutta to spread the spiritual message of Swamiji but has diversified extensively to help the needy in the last couple of decades.

Today the Ramakrishna Mission has spread itself as a giant banyan tree with its branches and offshoots operating in many parts of the world. Its activities have stirred the inner world of man outside India. In areas such as providing relief, service, mass-education, technical education, setting up mutts for women, promoting village and tribal welfare, agricultural development through scientific method, translating scriptures such as the Upanishads into different languages, providing medical aid and, lastly, bridging the gap between the East and the West, the Ramakrishna Mission has done pioneering work. Many organizations in India and elsewhere have sprung up today which are the direct results of the activities of the Ramakrishna Mission based on Practical Vedanta.

When the earthquake struck Gujarat in January 2001 it flattened numerous structures. Prime among them were the schools around the state providing education for thousands of children. A few villages near Porbandar District were badly damaged by earthquake. One of them was Keshav. RK Mission embarked on the task of rebuilding the destroyed schools in 11 villages including Keshav. The plan was to build an 8-room school with earthquake retrofits capable of providing education for 300 children from 1st to 7th standards. The land for the purpose was granted by the Gram panchayat. To ascertain the quality of the construction and for faster reconstruction, RK mission chose Larsen & Toubro (L&T) as the partner for procuring pre-casted structures for the building.

VIDE worked with the RK mission and provided USD 33,000 for the reconstruction of the Keshav School. RK mission started the work in July and completed the construction in 3 months as committed. The school is now providing education with the help of Gujarat government.
