The earthquake that struck the Indian Province of Gujarat on the morning of January 26, 2001 was one of the two most deadly earthquakes to strike India in its recorded history. It measured 7.9 on the Richter scale and its tremors were felt within a radius of 1200 miles. One month after the earthquake, official Government of India figures place the death toll as close to 20,000 and the number of injured at 166,000. Indications are that 600,000 people were left homeless, with 348,000 houses destroyed and an additional 844,000 damaged. The Indian State Department estimates that the earthquake affected, directly or indirectly, 15.9 million people out of a total population of 37.8 million. More than 20,000 cattle are reported killed. Government estimates place direct economic losses at $1.3 billion. Other estimates indicate losses may be as high as $5 billion.

In just 2 weeks, VIDE was able to raise over $750,000, thanks to the generous contributions by the donors. We at VIDE would also like to thank Cisco Foundation and the management at Cisco for matching dollar-to-dollar a percentage of the total money raised and for their overall support in our fund collection drive. Over the past year, VIDE has put in tremendous effort in identifying and supporting committed NGOs for rehabilitating the victims of the disaster. Below is a listing of all the projects VIDE has undertaken in Gujarat.
